Cadence Demonstrates First 128 GT/s PCIe 7.0 Interconnection Over Optics

Cadence showcases optical PCIe 7.0 interconnect, demonstrating technical prowess despite pending specification finalization.

At the PCI-SIG DevCon 2024, Cadence demonstrated an optical connectivity solution for PCIe 7.0, despite the standard still being in development. The demo featured a 128 GT/s interconnection over optics, showcasing Cadence's technical capabilities.

Using a low-latency, non-retimed connection, Cadence demonstrated the transmission and reception abilities of its PCIe 7.0 IP. The setup achieved a stable pre-FEC BER of ~3E-8, meeting the PCIe specification's requirement. The linearity and margin of the Eye PAM4 histograms indicated excellent performance.

PCI-SIG's Optical Workgroup was formed to standardize PCIe over optical interfaces. While proprietary PCIe connectivity solutions are currently available, the development of an optical standard aims to provide a unified approach. PCI-SIG emphasizes that it is not creating a standard for specific optical technologies but rather a technology-agnostic specification that supports various optical technologies.

Cadence's demonstration included various PCIe setups, including electrical PCIe 7.0, PCIe 6.0 configurations, interoperability demos, and JTOL testing. The demos showcased the company's cutting-edge capabilities and the progress towards optical connectivity solutions for future PCIe standards.
