Investigation launched after National Guard officers were seen at the scene of Mexico massacre

Mexico's President investigates murders after security video shows National Guard officers entering the scene before the killings in León.

In central Mexico, investigations are ongoing following a murder incident where security footage implicated National Guard officers. The killings occurred in León, Guanajuato, amidst ongoing turf battles between drug cartels.

National Guard officers are implicated after footage showed them entering the property before the killings and leaving with a black bag. Two survivors witnessed the attack and hid on the roof. The slain victims included two children, an eight-month-old baby and a two-year-old boy.

Guanajuato is a highly violent state due to cartel conflicts. More police officers were killed there in 2023 than in the entire United States. Recent incidents include the assassination of a mayoral candidate, a mass shooting at a pre-Christmas party, and the discovery of bodies in a vehicle.

The Zetas and Jalisco cartels have been engaged in a bloody turf war for control of Guanajuato. The U.S. State Department urges caution when traveling to the region due to the high murder rate.

Mexico has witnessed over 450,000 murders since the government's military deployment in 2006 to combat drug trafficking, with most of the killings attributed to criminal gangs.
