G7: Giorgia Meloni says Israel is falling into a Hamas trap in Gaza

Giorgia Meloni criticized Israel's actions in Gaza, saying Hamas had lured it into a trap. She also announced the EU's exclusion from a $50bn loan to Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized Israel's response to Hamas in Gaza, arguing that it has fallen into a Hamas trap designed to isolate Israel.

Meloni also stated that the EU will not contribute directly to the G7's $50 billion loan for Ukraine. The loan will be funded by the US, Canada, UK, and possibly Japan.

Despite France's and America's protests, Meloni defended removing the word "abortion" from the G7 communique. She emphasized that the communique upholds women's health services and LGBTQ+ rights.

Meloni downplayed concerns about Israel's security, suggesting that it should consider President Biden's plan for a permanent Gaza ceasefire based on an Israeli withdrawal.

She also emphasized that the frozen Russian assets used to fund the loan to Ukraine will likely not be returned to Russia for years, as their release is tied to a peace process that would include discussions on Ukraine's reconstruction.

Meloni dismissed Putin's recent peace offer as propaganda rather than a genuine peace proposal.
